Aqib Talib speaks out on trade to Rams, joining Marcus Peters in L.A.

In a matter of weeks, the Los Angeles Rams completely overhauled half of their secondary. While their starting safeties will remain the same in John Johnson and Lamarcus Joyner, they’ll have two new anchors at cornerback.

Marcus Peters was the first domino to fall as he was traded from the Chiefs to Los Angeles, giving the Rams a stud young cornerback who leads the NFL in interceptions the past three years. Then this past week, they landed veteran Aqib Talib from the Broncos, reuniting him with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

Talib thanked John Elway and the Broncos for putting him in a great situation with the Rams, and he’s excited to get the “final chapter” of his career started.

“What better place to do it than L.A., man,” Talib told NFL Network. “With that market. With Wade Phillips. With a young energetic corner on the other side, man, to bring back that youth to me. A great quarterback and Todd Gurley, it’s just a great situation in my opinion.”

Speaking specifically on joining Peters in the secondary, Talib is thrilled. He and Peters lead all active players in interceptions since they each came into the league with Talib picking off 34 since 2008.

Peters is a ball hawk himself, and Talib doesn’t feel the need to make him better.

“I’m not trying to make him better,” Talib said of Peters. “He had eight interceptions – he’s already cold. I’m just going to just be me. … He was one of the first guys to FaceTime me. So he’s already a friend of mine. I already talked to him.

“It’s going to be good, man. It’s going to be good. I can’t wait to get in the same locker room with him.”

Of course, both players are outspoken and carry strong personalities. It’s the main reason Peters was traded in the first place, and it’s partly the reason for Talib bouncing around the NFL a bit.

With the Rams building a strong foundation and having success under Sean McVay, it shouldn’t be too difficult to keep them both focused on winning.
