NFL Draft’s top guard prospect says he can stop Aaron Donald

When discussing the best interior defenders in the NFL, the names that typically come to mind are Aaron Donald, Fletcher Cox and Geno Atkins. You could throw Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy in there, too.

As a whole, defensive tackles and 3-4 ends have evolved in the NFL, giving teams not only run-stuffers but guys who can get after the quarterback as pass rushers. In order to stop those types of players, you need strong offensive line play at guard and center.

The top interior lineman in this year’s draft class is Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson, who’s been dubbed the best run-blocker some analysts have ever studied, potentially landing in the top 5 this year.

He said on Thursday that he can be someone who stops the league’s best interior defenders.

That’s some big talk for a player who has yet to play an NFL snap, but there’s little doubt Nelson can back it up. It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising to see him in the Pro Bowl as a rookie, dominating defensive linemen right out of the gate.

Nelson may not be the perfect prospect, but when it comes to guards, he’s as good as they come. He could get a chance to back up his talk against Donald in 2018 if he’s drafted by one of their 13 opponents.
